About Our Concert . . .
The story began in 2006 when a volunteer teacher named Toni Herndon and her very dedicated students decided to create scholarships for students in Africa. A wonderful lady named Makeda Dread who is the executive director for the World Beat Center, heard of our goal and helped us set up the first concert in 2007. Since then, The Brighter Side Foundation was formed and now pairs up directly with the World Beat Center and Christina Parinio of the International Rescue Committee, to teach an after-school program on active global citizenship.
The focus of this after-school program is to inform students of the needs of developing nations, inspire them to act, and empower them to gain the necessary skills to truly create a positive change in the world through the Local To Global Benefit Concert.
This exciting student-driven event now happens every spring and is the final result of the hard work of many individual students and non-profit organizations coming together to make a positive difference in the world. Bands, dance troops, restaurants, and sponsors also donate their talents and goods to ensure a fun and successful evening for all.
The Local to Global Concert will continue to offer self-improvment and leadership skills to the youth of San Diego, as well as offer resources for a brighter tomorrow for students and children in Africa. All it takes to change the world is passion plus action.
