What an incredible evening!  This inspiring event resulted in not only a platform for our students to exhibit their leadership and passion for global change, but it also generated scholarship funds for under-privileged students in Africa.  Among the featured highlights were the Hawaiian reggae band The Lambsbread, the Ugandan dance troop The Heartbeats of Africa, and several student driven performances.  The evening also included a powerful message of hope from Crawford High’s own Zaybab, as well as a vision of unity by 91X fm radio personality Makeda Dread.  The Local To Global benefit concert will continue to promote local youth development and aid in international charitable causes for many years to come.  Thank you for attending and being such a special part of positive change in this world!.

Excerpts from Our Event's Motivational Speaker
By Zanub Elmi
Age: 18 • Grade: 12

“I realized that there aren’t many words in the English dictionary to describe or capture what Local To Global, this club, this organization, this family means to me as well as everyone else involved.  As a high school student who came to the United States from a war-torn country, I have always felt the need to help those who are less fortunate than I am.  Maybe it is because I have been in those same unfortunate circumstances not too long ago, but when the opportunity came to volunteer with my fellow peers and create a club that is dedicated to helping others, I jumped at the chance.  Together we have found leadership in participating in this club, we have all supported each other through this journey, have complimented each other’s weaknesses and have overcome fears together.  We saw the changes it made in us as well as for the kids in Africa.  Local To Global stays true to its title.   We seniors will have to step down soon, but with this student-run organization we will pass the torch for the legacy of this revolutionary movement to continue on throughout future generations.”

An evening of elegance, global causes, and great ape art… yes, the night was a huge success due to the hard work of all involved.  Some of the elements in this event included donated professional & student artwork for silent auction, and two raffled off paintings created by Janey the Orangutan from the San Diego Zoo.  The students conducted themselves very professionally and made all our guests feel very welcome.  They also did a great job leaving our visitors inspired that positive change can happen in this world.  The event revenue will go directly back into the Local To Global after-school program by allowing us to cover production costs of the Local To Global Concert on March 8, 2008.

Artwork
'iHear, iLearn, iKnow'

The influence for this artwork derived from my desire to express my ideas of the Africa I know and hear about as a teenager in America. The iPod is the main structure of this piece because if you ask most people, it’s something they can’t live without. In my eyes, Africa is something the world can’t thrive without. The colors also have significance: Black is for the color of the people, Red is for the color of their hardship and struggles, green is for the color of their hard work and dedication, Yellow is for the color of the riches of their land, and White is for the color of the influence of the western world. In general the colors are symbolic for the past, the iPod is for the future, and the artwork in itself is symbolic for the future also. It represents the possibilities that can be presented by creatively using your own talents for the benefit of those who could use it the most.
